Now that FAF’s So. Cal conference is over it’s time for a look back. Some of you know me as RossBondReturns from the FAF forums, others know me in person, and only a few of those know the true story I’m about to relate to you. You see I not only attend the conference out here live but I also help out by being part of the Livestream and making sure that those joining us through the internet feel welcome.

Friday Night

Nathanael dropped me off at around 10:30 where I’m staying in Highland, 8.8 miles from Trinity Evangelical Free Church. Sitting on the couch I vowed that I would make it there early so I could experience the first presentation live, but most importantly to be with my Livestream friends. The first presentation started at 8 A.M.- no problem I’ll simply catch an earlier bus.

Then I realize it’s the weekend the earliest bus come by my stop at 7:57 A.M.! Maybe I can call someone but no I’ve run out of minutes on my phone, then there’s only one option. What I often refer to as the Long Walk. 

Seeing that I do a lot of walking I know certain “Checkpoints” on my route when doing the long walk. For instance from my front door to Packinghouse (Calvary Chapel Redlands) takes me exactly 1 hour 10 minutes. From there to the city center takes around 40 minutes…and from there to Trinity Evangelical Free Church takes 40 minutes. All told an approximate walk time of 2:30.

Knowing this I set my alarm to vibrate me awake at 4:45 so I could lave at 5:00 in the morning so I’ll make it there at around 7:20. Good night folks…we’ll wake up after the break.

My alarm vibrates me awake. I can’t remember why I set my alarm so I turn it off instead of hit snooze and fall asleep.

Awaking with a start I suddenly remember with great clarity why I have to leave. Clearing and packing my things takes around 5 minutes, and then bag on shoulder and out the door.

Cold. No light on the horizon yet.

My route takes me down the street to Baseline, and then a right at the intersection of Baseline and Palm. I walk on the sidewalk facing opposing traffic, I’m able to walk faster than usual because there’s no sun beating down.

As the pre-dawn light began to lighten the sky I continued to check my time to see how I was doing, my camera is set to magnify available light so it was a lot darker than you see in the next photo. This photo was taken midway across the Santa Ana River Wash.

Having made it through the was and with sunrise approaching I made it to the junction of San Bernardino Ave. and Alabama Street which I took this photograph.

At this point I was around half way to Trinity perhaps a little further and the heat of the morning sun was at the very least thawing me out. I would cut through to Colton Avenue…and then walk down Texas to Redlands Blvd. This took approximately 15-20 minutes, I took this picture at the 40 minutes to go mark.

My energy level was rising as I got closer and closer to being with everyone at Trinity, but most especially to those I love to share the weekend with on the Livestream. Approximately 30 minutes later I found myself walking through Ford Park.

After crossing through Ford Park it’s simply a matter of crossing under the freeway and walking along the road and up to the church. The last few minutes I’m pretty elated but I haven’t checked my phone for the time in a little while.

So this is how my Saturday started with a 2:35 minute walk from Highland to Redlands and I made it just on time. I got to spend a full day on the Livestream with everyone joining us from round the world!

More than a good enough reason to go on the long walk to the Livestream.

corner of my facebook page. From it one of my friends had commented on a quotation which was very much a disingenuous statement especially looking back on what I was taught growing up in Adventism. So in this article we are going to look at that quote and discuss how the behavior of an individual within Adventism is in fact used as a factor in determination of not only their walk, but in relationship to Salvation.

An Interesting Quotation

So let’s take a look at the quotation taken from this article: Adventist Review Article

“Our standards should be higher than those of any legalists because we understand that our behavior doesn’t determine our salvation, so why not aim high?”

The first thing that should be noted is that apparently the author of the article really thinks that the Adventists must be the most in tune, best, finest, legalists with the highest standards possible. That smacks of pride and reminds me of how Paul viewed himself looking back on who he once was:

³ For we are the circumcision, the ones who serve by the Spirit of God, boast in Christ Jesus, and do not put confidence in the flesh— ⁴ although I once also had confidence in the flesh. If anyone else thinks he has grounds for confidence in the flesh, I have more:⁵ circumcised the eighth day; of the nation of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew born of Hebrews; regarding the law, a Pharisee; ⁶ regarding zeal, persecuting the church; regarding the righteousness that is in the law, blameless.

Philippians 3:3-6

Remember that Paul was once Saul, and he was a member of the Pharisees, the adamant Legalists of the day. He attempted to bring the Christian Church to ruin before God caused him to be Born Again on the road to Damascus. This transformation can be seen in the next few verses of Philippians 3:

⁷ But everything that was a gain to me, I have considered to be a loss because of Christ.⁸ More than that, I also consider everything to be a loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. Because of Him I have suffered the loss of all things and consider them filth, so that I may gain Christ ⁹ and be found in Him, not having a righteousness of my own from the law, but one that is through faith in Christ—the righteousness from God based on faith.

Yet Saul, renamed on rebirth to Paul considered all the legalistic perfectionism of his past to be filth, useless, now that he has gained Christ and been found in Him.

If this is the case with Paul, what of the author of the article. It seems to me that he clings to the pride of legalism over anything else. Let’s break down the next portion of the quotation after the break.

“…because we understand that our behavior doesn’t determine our salvation…”

When I first read this part of the statement I didn’t know whether to laugh incredulously or weep tears of bitter frustration. Mainly because this statement is the polar opposite of what Adventists believe and what legalists hold to be true. Growing up as Adventists we were told that we could live a life without sin because Christ had no advantage over us!

Could you imagine that Jesus, Immanuel ( God With Us), the God-Man, God in human flesh having no advantage over us- what absurdity.

Yet countless Adventists spend long painful lives of failing, coming up short, missing the mark- and yet Christ did it and so can we!

We need to try harder…we need to pray more…we’re doing something wrong.

The failure is in us not Christ.

Christ might have failed.

Adventism taught that Christ could have sinned. This teaching comes about because they don’t understand that Jesus is God and God cannot sin. They teach that we’re just like Jesus, and since we have no spirit but are body + breath = a living soul, that Christ was the same.

Can a false Christ like this save anyone? NO because if Christ isn’t born full of the Spirit He WILL sin. The Adventist Christ cannot be the perfect spotless Lamb, because if you’re born without any type of spirit you will naturally sin.

Thankfully Adventism is wrong about Christ. Christ is only like us in that He had the appearance of a Man, He gave up the radiance of His glory left it behind in Heaven. However He was spiritually alive, He was God incarnate, He couldn’t have sinned anymore than the sun can choose to turn itself off.

Our behavior was absolutely attached to our salvation, and one item of our behavior does in fact determine your salvation as an Adventist.

The Sabbath.

Adventists elevate the Law but Especially the Sabbath into such a lofty position as to make it a salvational point. To Adventists keeping the Jewish Sabbath, the Seventh Day, is the seal of God. Keeping the Sabbath proves that you are a child of God and therefore saved.

This may sound harsh but it needs to be said, Adventists making Sabbath the Seal of God instead of God the Holy Spirit is as bad as the Catholic Church elevating Mary and making her a Co-redemptrix with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Both are ridiculous and as false at the very lies and scripture twisting that they’re built upon.

As an Adventist PK I’d fail, fail, fail, I could never be good enough, try harder, pray longer, you’re doing it wrong, Christ did it!

Is it any wonder that the majority of those that do leave Adventism shoot off in all sorts of directions. The three major ones are:

1. Agnosticism
2. Another false religion (including Prosperity Gospel/Name it and Claim it/Dominion Now Theology etc.) and Churchianity.
3. Nothing at all.

I was so relived when in 1987 God revealed the truth to me, that I had to surrender myself to Him, and accept His work in Christ’s Life- culminating in His death, burial and resurrection- and stop trying to use my “good works” and “good behavior” to perhaps convince God that I deserved Salvation.

None of us deserve salvation…that’s why it’s a gift by grace through faith.

On top of the problem of behavior, and there being no way it’s ever good enough, Adventism like any cultic system doesn’t offer any kind of security of salvation.

In fact they make it so unlikely that if people truly understood what the Investigative Judgment was all about, if this underlying truth was actually taught from the pulpit, Adventists would be leaving in droves.

Since the seal of God in Adventism is the Sabbath and not the Indwelling of God the Holy Spirit in the Believer there is no security in Adventist Salvation.

The Investigitave Judgment is so messed up I’ll just point you to this video I made so I don’t have to write anymore for this section.

Hopefully that cleared things up.

The Bible on the other hand teaches we have Security in our Salvation. We’re indwelled and sealed by God the Holy Spirit who is the Seal of God. And are no longer under any kind of Judgment.

“So why not aim high?”

Why not indeed…so what is aiming high in the perspective of the author of the article?

“Rather than living a mostly secular life with some sacred around the edges, we should be living a mostly sacred life with the secular relegated to the edges.”

This is in fact exactly what we are called to do as Christians. To be no longer conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewing of our minds.

When I was Born Again I had a stagnant life of growth as a Christian because I remained conformed to my Adventism and not Transformed by the word. I clung to the past instead of stepping out in faith and growing into the new creation I had become.

The reality of Adventism is that during the week their churches are for the most part locked up, there are no midweek services, morning or evening bible studies, no vibrancy.

When I last visited a SDA Church during the Adult Sabbath School class I was sickened by how proud they were to devote 1/7th of the week to the Lord.

The Lord states that we are to take up His cross Daily and follow Him. We do this personally of course but it is important  for a church to thrive to do it corporately as well.

The Spiritual vitality and well being of a church can be readily discerned by the spiritual growth of the believers within.

In Conclusion

The only spiritual standards that matter are God’s and that we realize that we are incapable of meeting even the barest minimum of their lofty standards. Adventists can spin their words and make themselves sound and look Christian to the eyes of a lot of people but God sees through the lies and hipocracy.

All that’s needed is for you to follow God’s leading to the end of yourselves and trust all your cares fully on Him.

Then you’ll be 100 percent secure in your salvation 100 percent of the time.

Well it has been far too long since I’ve posted an article here at U.A. and I apologize for that. It has been a very busy year especially full because of working on the Christian film The Thief in The Night which is now in post production. Now that I have a bit more time on my hands I plan to post articles more regularly, ass  always though it’s as the Lord leads.

Tonight we’re going to be looking at how The Word can be misinterpreted badly when something is given an incorrect definition and in order to do that we are going to look at the story of  The Woman at The Well.

A Bit of Background

In the time of Christ the Jewish people generally traveled around Samaria, for the Samaritans were considered inferior and unclean. In fact Christ did not teach in Samaria at all except on this one occasion. Once a Samaritan woman who came to the Lord out of faith for help- the Lord granted her request. This Samaritan woman came to Him though when He was not in Samaria but near to Samaria- what faith she had!

In this passage Christ has sent the Disciples away to get some food, when a woman came to draw water for the flocks she cared for, in the middle of the day. Ordinarily this was done in the morning however because of what this woman did with her life, to avoid the ridicule of others she came to get water in the middle of the day.

This is where she meets Christ and finds out about the living water, as she is never the same. I want to look at a short segment from this wonderful story.

19 “Sir,” the woman replied, “I see that You are a prophet. 20 Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, yet you Jews say that the place to worship is in Jerusalem.”

21 Jesus told her, “Believe Me, •woman, an hour is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. 22 You Samaritans worship what you do not know. We worship what we do know, because salvation is from the Jews. 23 But an hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth. Yes, the Father wants such people to worship Him. 24 God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”

25 The woman said to Him, “I know that •Messiah is coming” (who is called Christ). “When He comes, He will explain everything to us.”

26 “I am He,” Jesus told her, “the One speaking to you.” John 4:19-26 (emphasis mine).

After the break we’ll take a closer look at this passage.

“In Spirit and in Truth.”

Here Jesus is saying that soon, very soon, right then true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth.

As an Adventist I understood this as meaning we were to worship the Father with every breath and in the Word (through the lens of Ellen G. White (EGW)). This is because as an Adventist we had been told that spirit always meant breath and that The Word could only be understood clearly through the guiding word of EGW.

However that can’t be a right understanding because right then EGW sure wasn’t around- and as we’ve noted in the past humans do have a Spirit.

We are Born in Sin spiritually cut off from God, not in the Kingdom of the Son but the Domain of Darkness, we are spiritually dead.

That’s why in John 3 when Jesus met with Nicodemus He made if very clear that no one can see the Kingdom of Heaven unless they are Born Again.

Being Born Again is a once and forever event, it is not something we do for ourselves but a gift of God when we come to the Cross of Christ and receive Salvation. Born Again means Born of Heaven/Born of the Spirit- when we come to Christ God the Father sends God the Holy Spirit to indwell us and SEAL us.

He also causes our Spirit to be alive and commune with His Spirit which is in us. This shows that we truly are Born Again Sons and Daughters of the Living God.

We cannot worship Him in Spirit and in Truth unless we are Spiritually Born Again- because until that time we are spiritually dead.

When we’re Born Again we not only can but will Worship Him in Spirit and in Truth. Our Spirit communes with the Holy Spirit in us…and we cannot help but trip over ourselves to learn more about The Truth- Jesus Christ Himself.

To do this we read the Word of God through the illuminating and clarifying lens of God the Holy Spirit. Who brings clarity instead of confusion and certainty instead of the unknown.

While EGW muddies the water with the silt of confusion- the Holy Spirit clears the water through the filters of Truth, Faith and Assurance.

Because of this we Do want to praise the Lord with every breath, to share of our Salvation and the Gospel with all that we meet and to let the Lord speak through us so that the muddy becomes clear. Just like with Christ, sharing and living out or faith should be like food to us- such thoughts and actions should fuel us. And all of it is done for the Glory of God and not our own.

If there’s one thing I want you to remember it’s that you can’t Born Again yourself. It’s not a feeling, it’s not going to the front at a camp meeting or summer camp year after year and rededicating yourself to God.

It’s about God rebirthing you Spiritually so that you can truly worship Him in Spirit and in Truth!

I’ve said this a number of times in the past but that Adventist teaching of salvation is woefully inadequate, Jesus saves By Grace through Faith- PERIOD!

Salvation is not a revolving door, it is not the hokey pokey.

Nothing we can do will get us unsaved because it is GOD who is the one who causes our Heavenly Rebirth and Seals us with His Spirit- we can’t cause ourselves to be born again ( Born of Heaven – big hint that) – anymore than we can tell the sun when to rise. And since God is the one who seals us with His Spirit, He is the only one who can unseal us.

For the record there is nowhere in the Bible where God has unsealed anyone who had been Born Again.

Such assurance enables me to be able to play my role without worrying about me falling out of Salvation, I am secure in Christ. I am in Him and He is in Me. He (through the Holy Spirit) doesn’t leave me when I put on my wardrobe, and when I portray The Father of Lies on the set. In fact thus far not only has He by no means left me but He has enabled me to play m role with the intensity and dynamics needed to bring an accurate portrayal of you know who to the film.

Far from shunning me and unsealing me from salvation- He holds me even tighter.

Is your God so weak that His salvation is ineffectual?

Did Jesus (the God Man) die on that cross to offer Salvation or the promise of possible salvation?

The only Dangerous role to play is to play the role of someone who doesn’t take the Word of God about The Salvation on the Cross seriously and to degrade Salvation so much that you can fall out of it.

25 “I did tell you and you don’t believe,” Jesus answered them. “The works that I do in My Father’s name testify about Me.
26 But you don’t believe because you are not My sheep.
27 My sheep hear My voice, I know them, and they follow Me.
28 I give them eternal life, aa and they will never perish— ever! No one will snatch them out of My hand.
29 My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all. No one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand.
30 The Father and I are one.”  John 10:25-30

Salvation is secure!

What's wrong with this picture? A LOT.

I’m sure the vast majority of people who’ve visited this blog have seen this picture in some shape or form. It’s certainly a striking concept, it’s well done artistically and in that case it has merit. However what it depicts is a gross distortion of scripture, the Word of God is quite imperative, Satan was defeated on the cross this is not an even battle.

Jesus is God and Satan is a Created Being

The first thing that is so very wrong about this artwork is that it puts Jesus who is God at the same level of strength as Satan who is a created being. Remember all of creation came through the Voice of The Father, God the Son, the Word, Jesus Christ. Therefore Jesus Christ is in a position of superiority over Satan simply because He is God and His very utterance brought Lucifer, who fell from Grace and became Satan, into existence.

To continue on that point just giving Satan large muscles and a frightful sneer isn’t enough to tip the scales a created being is always less powerful that the one who created it.

Take into the equation that Satan was soundly defeated when Jesus- The God Man- was at His weakest. When He was hanging on the Cross and had become sin for us so much so that the Father could not look upon the Son “although it pleased Him to bruise Him.” Christ was still more powerful in His death than Satan has been in his entire life!

Why is it that so many false religions inflate the power of Satan to such ridiculous proportions? Logic would dictate that those religions that do elevate Satan’s status so much are in fact under his control. And the frightening thing is that on the surface these false religions under his control look- on the surface at least- very similar to Christianity. In fact those not grounded in the Word of God can easily be deceived right into a false religion simply because it looks so right, and sounds so legit- even if it’s way off base.

A major problem of false religion is the fact that they look and sound so legitimate that it isn’t until you take the time to look into their claims and underlying principles that you realize that there are problems in the first place.

In Conclusion

Satan may not fight fair- in fact he does not fight fair but the reason for this isn’t because he’s a dirty fighter (even though he is) but because he’s already lost the fight. Any religion that delves into making more of Satan than he really is, and glorifying him with greater power than he ever has had is a great danger. The writings of Ellen G. White when they (often) focus more on the forces of darkness bestowing them with much greater power than they have in reality- should be a warning sign to all to beware.

There is no fair fight. Christ is God…and He defeated the forces of evil on the Cross of Calvary to posit that the force of both parties is even close to being equal is false advertising. There is no tug of war or arm wrestling match simply because there’s no contest.

God is already the Victor through Christ!

After a couple of witnessing opportunities and around an hour and a half I chose to head off to catch a bus back to Highland, but on the way down I wanted to check out a booth I had noticed on my walk of the street earlier. I had seen books and magazines and wanted to see if it was Christian and if their product was free.

So I walked over and felt in my Spirit that this was not of The Spirit. And of course The Spirit was entirely correct. What I found was not Christian but Adventist- and although the person sitting told me that items were free I knew in reality that they came at great cost. The cost of Slavery to the Law.

It was not however until I looked up that both the person who said that the items were free and I recognized each other. I used to be a member of the Redlands Adventist Church (and judging by what he said to his compatriot they’re still counting me as a member or perhaps he’s assuming I’m on the books) to be frank I don’t care I know what I am. I am free in Christ and Baptized into His death and live now a new Life by resting in my Lord and Savior.

We had a conversation, we talked about family, life, work and church- things were amicable until I told him  where I go to church. I won’t go into any details of the conversation except for one point at the end but he looked almost possessed as he ripped into Grace, Sunday Keeping and everything else that is available when the Believer enters into God’s Rest (Hebrews 4). He cited that I was damned, deceived, going against God, Breaking the eternal commandments- every word he spoke against the freedom found through Grace grieved both my Spirit and God the Holy Spirit who indwells and seals me- I could feel the pain, and my Spirit yearned for my old friend to understand the blessings of Grace.

One mentioning the Eternality of the Ten Commandments I pointed out the absurdities of an of the commands being eternal. Who would be told not to make a graven image in Heaven for example?!

However he was dogged and determined to keep the Ten Commandments as eternal.

This is how our conversation ended:

‘The Law is love’, he sneered at me. (I don’t believe he realized just how vehemently angry angry and vindictive he was coming across).

“God is love,” I responded in Grace, “God is bigger than the Law.”

“No He isn’t!” 

Inside me God’s Spirit and My Spirit were in tears, how could anyone who claimed to be Christian blaspheme God in that way. I wanted to contend further for the Faith but I was simply flabbergasted. I could not remain there a moment longer so I explained that I had to go and that it had been a pleasure to talk with them…and I left.

God is greater than everything.

When you make the Law into an idol you put God into a box and God becomes god…and He can no longer save you.

I made sure I arrived early in fact I arrived over an hour early, that wasn’t exactly by design but it was certainly God’s plan. Let me tell you I did not expect the main guest speaker for the weekend Phil Bubar to be the one to open the door and let me inside. It was very nice to meet Phil and get to chat with him a little before the first presentation. That said I was glad I got in as early as I did because it enabled me to set up my laptop and all it’s accessories, I needed to be prepared to Tweet or Facebook or whatever the weekend.

Surprise!

Once all my stuff was set up in the back of the room I went to talk to Richard Tinker because he had been talking about the possibility of livestreaming the event. Much to my (happy) surprise I found that indeed we were going to be sending the event out live over the internet, and with that knowledge I went back to my laptop, opened the page, and logged in.

Live chat! Oh my! That was unexpected. To be honest I hadn’t expected something both so awesome and daunting however that wasn’t going to stop me from doing my best to include those online in the truthstream into the weekend proper. So I set about making them seem as much as possible as if they were ostensibly right there in the room participating with us.

Get ‘em Involved

As the first day continued I began to try and figure out ways to further bring the weekend to life for those joining us through the truthstream, all the while using my facebook update as my pseudo twitter feed. I was putting a lot of information out there and you can look me up on Twitter by searching for Ross Cooper and friending me or checking out my history on the wall. You’ll find a lot of information from each of the weekend’s presentations.

Friday night as I sat on the very couch where I am typing this post I contemplated how I could make Saturday even more interactive for those joining us through the truthstream. Looking at the breakout sessions I realized that there were two Questions and Answer Breakouts on in the morning and one in the evening- that was my answer.

I would make the offer to all the people on the Truthstream to ask their questions of Phil Bubar and Dale Ratzlaff…and record their answers.

And I’ll share those in Truthstreams Part Two!

I have a lot on my mind after this weekend. Both theologically and personally. I have new questions and old answers and new answers to old questions- there’s a lot bouncing around in my mind that hasn’t quite become grounded. There a lot of truth, about Truth (Jesus who is God) that I’m going to be contending with. That I’m going to be struggling with.

I’m going to be “working out my salvation with fear and trembling-” something we’re called to do, for a long time. And working out your salvation doesn’t mean that you’re worried about being saved or not…it means your studying into the depths of the Gospel and it’s ramifications to you on a personal level. It’s a call to never leave the awesome news, the challenging depths of the Gospel, but to feed on that truth and the Power of the Cross, and the washing of the Blood that was shed by Jesus Christ- the God Man- the Messiah. His blood shed for us- to quote our main speaker Phil Bubar-

“Christ became an ABOMINATION for us.”

To suggest that Satan could possibly become an abomination for us is itself an abomination. It’s also an oxymoron as Satan is already an abomination. Bear with me though if Satan, as Adventism claims is truly the Scapegoat that bears our sins in the end is that not tantamount to saying that in the end Satan is the one who is our salvation. I have trouble even thinking that let alone writing it, such a thought is beyond abhorrent.

Let me be perfectly clear, absolutely NOWHERE in The Word is there even a hint that Satan ever bears our sins- and Satan is NEVER EVER the Scapegoat!

When one strays from the clear teaching and understanding of the Inerrancy of Scripture then you have spurious readings of key doctrines including a horrible twisting of the Gospel.

Christ was Born of the Virgin Mary through the Holy Spirit- at the appointed time.

Christ was Led by the Holy Spirit into the desert to confront Satan- at the appointed time.

Christ turned the Water into wine- at the appointed time.

Christ entered Jerusalem at the start of Holy Week at the appointed time.

Christ became our perfect Lamb- our ABOMINATION- our salvation- our scapegoat- the VICTOR- at the appointed time.

Christ rose again-  as the First Fruits- at the appointed time.

Christ ascended- at the appointed time.

Christ will call His Bride the Church home…at ANY TIME!

There is no work that needs to be done because…

“It is finished!”

On the Cross when Christ became an ABOMINATION…He took our sins upon Himself- when we Rest in Christ He dresses us in His RIGHTEOUSNESS! WE PUT ON CHRIST! And we rest in the most expensive GRACE ever.

Let Christ be what he came to Earth to be- the Perfect Sacrifice- the Scapegoat- an abomination- for you.
